**SUBMISSIONS ARE NOW CLOSED**
Who can submit?
Silk + Smoke accepts worldwide submissions and anyone can submit their work. We especially encourage unpublished, emerging writers who want to publish their weird and wonderful stories that don’t quite fit in.
You can read more about the kind of submissions we’re looking for on the About page.
What to submit to Silk + Smoke
Our objective is to curate diverse fiction and creative nonfiction.
Regardless of genre or format, we want to provide a platform for the transgressive stories – the ones that struggle to find the right home.
We are seeking submissions of short stories, poems, scripts, and creative nonfiction.
Silk + Smoke doesn’t have a set theme or a preferred genre or style. Send us horror, sci-fi, fantasy, historical fiction, absurdism, adventure, dystopia, political fiction, comedy, or anything you like.
We are based in Scotland, so, naturally, we would love to see some submissions written in Scots, too.
How to format your submission
Word limits –
- Fiction – max. 2,000 words
- Creative nonfiction – max. 2,000 words
- Poetry – max. 50 lines
- Scripts – max. 10 A4 pages
Cover page –
Within your Word doc submission, please include a cover page with:
- Your name
- Title of your submission and word count (or line count for poetry)
- A short bio about yourself (max. 100 words)
Feel free to include a link to your social media profile(s) or your website.
Font, size, and page numbers – Please ensure your writing is in a legible 12pt font with page numbers in a Word doc.
Number of submissions per person – For the first issue, while we gauge the level of submissions, we’re asking writers to send only two submissions each.
Simultaneous submissions – You are more than welcome to submit work to us that you have recently sent out to other publications. If your piece is accepted elsewhere before you hear back from us, simply let us know.
If your work has previously been published (by another magazine or self-published by you), you can still send it to Silk + Smoke provided that the other publication gives you permission to republish.
Multimedia submissions – If you choose to do so, you can include a video or audio file of your work being read/performed or a visual composition along with your text submission (e.g. concrete poetry).
Please ensure that you still include a Word doc. transcript with any recording or visual representation of your submission.
Where to send your submission
To submit to Silk + Smoke, simply send your work in an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with your name and the submission category (e.g. Mary Shelley – Fiction Submission) in the subject line.
Submissions for Issue 1 will be open until March 1, 2019.
By submitting your work to Silk + Smoke, you are granting us permission to publish your writing on the S+S website and social media channels. Should we republish your work in another format (e.g. print edition), you will be notified and asked for your permission.
